How Screen Printing Works
Screen printing is a great way to create garments with colorful designs. It works by creating special stencils for each color and then using a squeegee to paint those colors onto the shirt. It’s great for making a lot of engaging shirts, but you need at least 24 of them to get started.
The Inks Used in Screen Printing
There are two main types: plastisol ink, which makes the colors really pop, and water-based ink, which feels lighter on the shirt. Plastisol ink is vibrant and long-lasting, while water-based ink gives a soft feel. These inks let you create amazing designs on your shirts, whether you want bold and bright or a more subtle look. They’re like the artist’s palette for crafting unique and eye-catching custom tees.
Specialty Screen Printing
Specialty screen printing adds extra flair to custom t-shirts. For example, metallic foil gives a shiny, metallic look, and discharge printing can make the colors look faded and vintage. These techniques make your shirts stand out and feel unique. So, if you want your tees to sparkle or have a vintage vibe, specialty screen printing is the way to go.
Full Color Screen Printing
Full color screen printing is like a secret trick for creating vibrant designs on t-shirts. Even though it might seem limited with only a few colors, it can actually make detailed and colorful prints. This is thanks to special techniques like half-tone printing, which use tiny dots to mix colors and create shades. So, whether you want a rainbow of colors or intricate designs, full color screen printing can make your t-shirts look amazing and full of life.
While screen printing takes more time and effort compared to other methods, it’s the go-to choice for large orders. At Red Bird Screen printing, a minimum order of 24 shirts per design is required since considerable time goes into setup.

Submitting Your Design for Screen Printing
Before we can start making screens for your design, we need a digital version of it in specific formats. Here are some guidelines:
- File Format: We prefer vector files like EPS, SVG, AI, or PDF. However, we can use other commonly used image types, such as PSD, TIF, PNG, JPG, or PDF.
- Resolution: Your design should be at least 300 DPI (dots per inch) at the size you want it printed.
- Colors: For screen printing, use 8 or fewer colors. If you have a raster file like JPG or PNG, we’ll need to convert it to a vector format and separate the colors into layers before we can use it for screen printing.

Plastisol ink is the go-to ink in the garment printing industry. It’s used in an estimated 93% of screen-printed apparel. It produces bold, vibrant colors with great adhesion to nearly all types of fabric. This ink creates a slightly thicker print that feels smooth to the touch and offers the most accurate pms colors when mixed. Our high-quality plastisol ink is perfect for printing on fabrics, including t-shirts, athletic jerseys, hoodies, and heat transfers. Plus, it lasts the life of the garment, withstanding a over a decade worth of wash and dry cycles without cracking, chipping, or peeling.
Plastisol ink can be printed on many items that can withstand the heat required to cure the ink and is porous enough to permit good ink adhesion. They do not dye the threads of a fabric like traditional dye material. Plastisol screen printing ink wraps around the fibers and makes a mechanical bond with the fabric. Screen printing plastisols will not adhere to non-porous substrates such as plastic, metal, wood and glass. They also will not adhere to water-proof nylon material without adding a bonding agent/catalyst. Unlike waterbased inks, we’re able to consistently and accurately mix very specific pms colors that are spot on. Waterbase and discharge inks can be tricky when matching certain pantones. The inks tend to change color during the drying/curing process.

Fashion trends are constantly evolving and if you’ve been keeping up with today’s fashion trends, you’ve probably noticed how Puff Ink Prints are regaining popularity especially with streetwear. The last 2 years we printed roughly 270+ orders that had requested Puff Ink.
What is a Puff Print?
Puff inks add a 3 dimensional look to your screen printed design. To achieve the Puff finish, we use a plastisol based ink that’s modified with the addition of a heat reactive foaming agent that makes the ink expand. This can be done with an ink color of your choice. It can be used across the entire artwork, or you can choose certain elements or colors of the design you’d like to carry the puff effect. As a result, you can make certain parts of the design to stand out and ‘pop’. The only downside is matching exact pantones. The puff additive makes it difficult to match darker pantones, so we generally recommend use of lighter colors since they can be matched easier
Less is More
There are no limitations when printing t-shirts with puff ink. We suggest using it for designs
with small details that are less than 1-2mm wide. It works best with when your design has thick lines and minimal small details. If you’d like text to have the puff effect, choosing the correct font is key. The thicker the lines the better the design will stand out. So go big or go home.

LOW RES aka “TONAL”.
A tone on tone print is a subtle style of printing that is best for creating a vintage or worn look and feel. In art and design, tone refers to the measurement of relative darkness or lightness.
Black on black has been a popular dark tone on tone print. Tone on tone prints work best when ink color is similar to the substrate. Also, we’ve found that tone on tone prints work best on blended/tri-blend shirts.
